Tip for using your iPad as a knitting tool
| Posted by Megan Goodacre on Apr 15, 2012 |

I love my iPad. But I've been an Apple girl long before I could afford my first Mac (an LG475, had to use 3 different credit cards, see if you can figure out my age from these clues) so I'm a little biased.
Here's a good trick for using your iPad as a knitting companion: get a decent PDF reader. I use GoodReader. GoodReader lets you view PDFs and make notes and marks right on the PDFs. It also makes it pretty easy to move files around. You can use GoodReaderUSB on your computer, and copy files back and forth from iPad to computer. Or (this is the one I prefer) you can use the free Dropbox system. Drop your PDF into your Dropbox, and pick it up from within GoodReader. Or you can Download from Web.
But here's the best thing about GoodReader: the mark up tools. The image above is a screenshot I just took on my iPad. To see the toolbar, just touch and hold the screen, or select a portion of text. You can add text, hidden notes, underline or highlight text, draw lines, arrows, shapes, or just draw freehand.
Here are some of the ways I use the mark up tools:
- Every time I move to the next row, I move the line.
- I also like to add notes; GoodReader has a callout feature, which adds an arrow that you can point at the text
- The highlight tool is great for highlighting stitch counts, or the size your are working on.
- The freehand drawing tool is great for circling areas of a pattern.
Oh, and I bought my iPad and GoodReader of my own free will, no one is bribing me to say nice things.
We'd love to hear from you. Add a comment

| I'm not familiar with those apps, and it will depend on the format of the magazine. Some magazines are pdf's. Those you should be able to open in your pdf reader (I used goodreader) and annotate them and bookmark them. Other magazines come in their own proprietary format with their own app and you probably won't be able to make notes on them. | |

| Question - I purchase vogue knitting and other mags for my iPad. I would like to somehow take a pattern from the mag and move it into knit companion or I annotate. Is there a way to do this? | |

| From Goodreader on your iPad, you can either: Go to Web Downloads and Browse the Web. Browse to the pdf file on the web and download the linked file. The file will go into your Goodreader documents. Or, if you've uploaded a file to your Dropbox, you can use the Connect to Server option in Goodreader. Beside Connect to Server, click Add, and enter your Dropbox log in. Then tap the dropbox name to connect, it should show you a list of files in your Dropbox. Tap a file and then tap the Download button at the bottom To use Dropbox on your Mac, open Dropbox (it should be in your Applications folder). You should see a little Dropbox icon on the Finder menu bar, on the top right. Click it and select Open Dropbox folder. You should get a new Finder window with the Dropbox. You can move files into and out of it as if it were another folder on your Mac. Hope that helps! |

| I actually bought an iPad for the sole purpose of using it as a knitting resource! The Apple Genius said that was the first time they heard of an iPad being purchased for that reason, but they agreed it was a brilliant idea. ;) | |

| Thanks for the tips. I use the Send to Kindle for PC to send PDFs to my iPad where the Kindle app for ereading can be used to read them. | |

| Thanks for posting that Megan! Very Helpful! I am looking forward to the release of your stitch chart tool! Maybe I will see if my son wants to attempt to design something like that for me while I wait! Love your work and your site! Judy in AZ |

| I just treated myself to an iPad and am finding that I'm mainly using it to knit from! You're the second person to recommend GoodReader and I'm smitten. | |
