Free Knitting Pattern: Canaletto Cowl

The Canaletto cowl is wide and luxurious, and emphasizes geometric lines and simple textures. Bands of seed stitch and eyelets are intersected by stocking stitch, and each texture catches the light differently. The stacked eyelets create a gentle bias, adding to the cowl’s flexibility for looping around your neck. Pattern includes two sizes; the larger size can be looped twice. The smaller size will make a simple neckwarmer. Suitable for the adventurous beginner.

Skill Level intermediate (working in the round, basic lace, reading from a chart)

Yarn Aran weight yarn, shown in Diamond Luxury Collection Cairo, color Mauve, 2 (3) x 100 g (each 168 m)

Finished Measurements Approx 12 by 19.5 (44) inches around. Larger size shown.

Tension/gauge 18 sts/24 rows = 10 cm/4 in

A note about the gauge: this is a relatively relaxed gauge for this weight of yarn and gives the cowl a nice drape. You may need to go up .5mm in needle size from what you would usually use for the yarn.

Needles US 8/5.0 mm 24-inch long circular

Other Supplies stitch marker, tapestry needle

Cowl

Cast on 88 (198) sts. Join in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Place a marker for beg of row.
If you want to adjust the circumference of the cowl, you can change the number of stitches by multiples of 22 or change your gauge.
